Questions to Ask Your Doula

Updated: Feb 1, 2023

It is important it is a match between the Doula and the birthing person. Below are some questions to ask your potential Doula to assess the best fit. They should be someone you feel an authentic and genuine connection with and who you could see yourself building trust and relationship.

Ask them about their experience

What training have they had? Are they certified? If so, it may be worth looking into where they were certified? Do they have any specializations? How many births have they been a part of?

What is their philosophy about birth and supporting a birthing person and their partner?

Though many Doula's will share approaches and values, many will have their own philosophy around birthing experiences, supporting birthing people and their partners.

What does their support include?

What roles do they provide pre-labor? Will they be available to meet and review your birth plan? Are they available for questions and concerns before labor? How about postpartum?

Do you provide an opportunity to debrief the labor?

Sometimes people will want to ask questions or review their labor after the birth. Will the Doula be available for this?

Do they have any Doulas on back up for times when they may not be available?

What are their fees and their refund policy?
